China has stepped up legislation towards artificial intelligence deepfake scams, according to mainland media.
In response to the growing use of "AI deepfake" technology for fraudulent purposes, the Chinese legislature has announced its commitment to strengthening governance and law enforcement relating to the issue, reported The Paper.
The relevant departments will take measures in accordance with the law to hold individuals involved in such activities legally accountable.
The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress has stated that existing laws - such as the Anti-Telecom and Online Fraud Law and the Criminal Law - already offer substantial support in combating and managing various forms of telecom network fraud, including AI deepfake scams.
